about

My tenth volume of improvised pieces for solo piano.

There is a loose theme through this collection about art and artists. I recently lashed out and bought myself a season pass to the Moma exhibition currently on at the National Gallery of Victoria, where the photos in the album art were taken. I've been stopping by every week of a Tuesday after my piano lesson, and was inspired to record a few improvisations based on the choice quotes from artists embedded in the descriptions of a handful of artworks. I began to name all of the improvisations on this volume with quotes from books, movies, and songs, and found I quite enjoy the aesthetic of the sentence-as-title.

There are times when the forms of music and visual art are indistinguishable for me. I have always experienced the synesthesic association between words, letters, numbers and colours, and in the last year have been consciously cultivating that link with notes, chords, and musical textures. But musical phrases are constantly manifesting as shapes for me; sometimes they form strong blocks of colour or texture, or appear as squiggly lines; they have thickness, depth, with varying degrees of opacity. In tracks 1, 3, 6 and 9, I tried to "paint" with the piano in the way I experience the style and technique of the artists they are inspired by.

The following is a bibliography of sorts, detailing where each of these quotes comes from. I'll say no more about them so you can investigate their origin if you choose, and perhaps hear in these songs the energy I was trying to capture.

1. 'Let us fling open the figure and let it incorporate within itself whatever may surround it.' - Umberto Boccioni, quoted in the description of the work 'Unique Forms of Continuity in Space' (1931) in the Moma exhibition at the NGV, 2018.

2. 'He whispered to each, "I've been up; there's nothing there."' - Trina Paulus, 'Hope for the Flowers' (1972), page 110.

3. '.. while keeping their autonomous life and without changing, they jostle one another.' - Joan Miro, 'I Work Like A Gardener' (2017), page 29.

4. '... the high country of the mind.' - Robert M. Pirsig, 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' (1974), page 116.

5. '... once you enter my house, then it becomes our house ...' - Chuck Roberts, 'My House' (1987).

6. 'I will astonish Paris with an apple.' - Paul Cezanne, quoted in the description of the work 'Still life with apples' (1898) in the Moma exhibition at the NGV, 2018.

7. '... a certain emotive disturbance generally designated by the name of inspiration.' - Igor Stravinsky, 'Poetics of Music' (1942), page 50.

8. 'That hill is looking closer tonight than it ever has before,' - Ginger, in the movie 'Chicken Run' (2000).

9. 'I fled to the form of the square, and the circle soon followed.' - Kazimir Malevich, quoted in the description of the work 'Suprematist Elements: Squares' (1923) in the Moma exhibition at the NGV, 2018.

10. 'On his tiptoes a man is not steady / Taking long strides he cannot keep pace' - Lao Tzu, Verse 24, 'Tao Te Ching', translated by Jonathan Star (2001), page 30.
