about

Quite without warning, I woke up one morning this month with my right wrist swollen and inflamed. An ultrasound confirmed my hand therapist's diagnosis of De Quervain's tenosynovitis, which affects the two tendons that control the thumb. The primary therapy for this condition is immobilisation of the wrist, so I find myself unable to play piano with my right hand for the time being. Consequently, this volume of improvisations has featured my left hand.

It's funny how much unexpected injury can have a positive impact on your life. My appreciation for my other functioning limbs and organs has gone through the roof! I count my blessings to be relatively sound of body and mind. I am thankful to be able to speak and hear and taste and think and breathe.

My experience of music has also changed by having the use of my core musical tool hanging in the balance. When I realised I would record this month's improvisations with only my left hand (a no-brainer), I felt relieved and excited. Here is something different, a chance to explore a different part of myself. This injury has also compelled me to finally get back into singing, which I haven't done seriously since high school. This volume features the first proper recordings of my voice in these improvisations (track 4 without a microphone, and tracks 7, 8, 9 and 10 with).

More than anything this unexpected bend in the road has forced the realisation that music is not so easily limited by the body's infirmity. And whatever happens, I'll always do my best to keep making it.
