about

I did something a bit weird and different on two of these tracks. After recording 247 I realised I hadn't armed the vocal mic and so my voice was way in the back of the track. Not satisfied with this, I decided to record a new one to replace it, but then became conflicted about the validity of this move, given my mandate of releasing each of these improvisations regardless of quality. On a whim I tried placing the vocals from the second one over the piano from the first one and found they lined up oddly well.

I began to play with the peculiar notion that these two takes could both 247 but from alternate dimensions, and that by breaking from my normal procedures, I had caused a tiny split in the seams between our dimension and another, and caused the improvisations from both to spill into each other. To reinforce this impression, I took a little of 247B and spliced it into 247A, and vice versa, at roughly the same point.

The title of 247A, 'The Subtle Knife', is a reference to a Philip Pullman novel of the same name; it is a tool that can cut portals between dimensions. 247B is called 'Ripples But No Stone' to evoke the idea of echoes caused by events in alternate realities, where the cause is hidden from those effected.

The album art for this volume is also an expression of this notion, depicting such a portal opening in an apartment complex in Brunswick that leads to a house party fire pit in Kew. I find the theory of infinite alternate realities to be a beautiful thought experiment, and that giving it some consideration has had a super positive impact on how I live my life. If you're interested in how this theory can manifest in really interesting, hilarious and thought-provoking ways, check out the inspired work of Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, 'Rick and Morty'.
