about

Last year I set myself the challenge of releasing a volume of ten improvisations each month, not selecting my favourites, but instead releasing each one I made regardless of my own response to them. It has been a deeply satisfying experience to be regularly creating and releasing music in this way, having previously only released recordings that were refined through multiple performances and stages of production. Since I can’t develop or edit these pieces, developments have instead occurred in my emotional approach to the process; I’ve been increasingly able to detach myself from any value judgements about this music, and hear each piece for its own beauty.

Doing this has started to give me the almost absurd impression that musical creations (and possibly artistic works in general) are all beautiful and valid in their own way, regardless of the value the artist or perceiver places on them. Like the somewhat kitsch cliche that compares humans to snowflakes, I now feel that beauty itself is contained in variation. In the same way, I see each of these little slices of improvised music—whether they are characterised by great clarity of conception or a tangle of awkward impulses—as beautiful and satisfying for their very difference.

I still have bouts of creative awkwardness, and I’ve felt self-conscious about releasing some recordings made during these weaker moments (even becoming self-conscious as I play), but ultimately find an awesome catharsis in setting them free. I would be sorry to have let my ego decide which ones would be released and which would remain on my computer unheard.

This project is about aggressively accepting one’s creative output, and by doing so acknowledging that everything we make is in some way worth sharing. I encourage everyone to try on the hat of seeing all your creations as valuable and worthy of being celebrated. It by no means stops you from striving for the highest possible level of creative process and output. It only helps you see the endless possibilities inherent in every moment of your activity.
