about

I had planned to focus the pieces in this month's volume on a musical practice I've been exploring recently, but they seem to have a mind of their own, and resisted that kind of channeling. Like all the recordings that precede them, these are little soundbites of my internal soundtrack. There are glimmers and echoes of the ambience around me, explorations of new and familiar feelings, as well as attempts to manifest abstract ideas as music.

This project is probably best described as a musical diary. I keep a daily written journal fairly faithfully, and have done so on and off since I was 16. There are many days where you don't feel like writing, but never an entry that you regret recording, and so too with these improvisations. This has been a bizarre and beautiful but busy month, and I haven't made a lot of time for practising, so when it came to recording myself, I've been feeling unconfident and scattered, and not much like sharing this state with the world. I often feel conflicted about the quality of the pieces, whether they show a face that I'm comfortable sharing publicly, or whether this whole thing is self-indulgent, or a classic quantity-over-quality error, but invariably I'm happy to have let them out. I'm trying to silence the voice of my ego when it comes to music, and constantly putting it on the line like this feels like the kind of shock therapy it needs.

I left this whole thing really late this month. You can see from the dates that it was a scramble to get them done in time, and now I'm writing this at 1am when I have an early rehearsal in the morning. Still, it feels good to have gotten here in time. My mum always said don't skip class just because you haven't done the homework. Just keep turning up. So here I am.
