about

Volume 4 of a project making musical episodes for the separation of ego from action in a creative setting.

I have been recording freely improvised pieces of music since 2016 as an exercise in creative mindfulness, and I'm still surprised by how the experience changes the more I do it. Recently the gap between creation and reception is closing in my mind, and now when I sit down to play I almost feel that I am playing directly to you! I'm happy to tell you that I am feeling less and less self-conscious being creatively vulnerable to an invisible audience, and I hope this encourages you to believe in this possibility for yourself in whatever activity you pursue.

Two themes emerged during the creation of this particular set of pieces, and so for me this volume is steeped in their contemplation. The first was learning how not to be intimidated by the infiniteness of possibilities available when you give yourself this kind of creative license. It is at times overwhelming to feel that anything you can imagine is an actionable creative option, but almost immediately anxiety turns to delight and wonder if you can let go of the idea that there are right and wrong ways through this feeling.

Realizing this gave rise to the second theme of this volume; I have been working on allowing the music to take shape of its own accord. I used to see intentionality and non-doership as opposing philosophies for creativity. Now it makes more sense to me to that these apparent opposites can be held in a dynamic relationship, and that appreciating the one enriches the other.

Anyway, thanks for reading and listening! It is a deep source of joy for me to be able to share both the product and process of this experience.
