As an artist whose craft is primarily performance, sometimes you forget to make things. This project is a practice in making art that takes on a life of its own after the initial act of creation.

I love being a performing musician. I think there's something very life-affirming about live music. It is by nature fleeting and captivating, such that it effortlessly pulls you into the present moment. Music that is improvised, or has improvisation as a key element of its construction, exerts this force in waves that rise and crash in endless succession while the music lasts.

Recording improvisation is a strange and wonderful experience. Something about capturing this inherently ephemeral thing changes it. I've been trying to express this in the notes for the last four volumes, and I'm not sure if I'm any closer. I think the best I can say right now is that when I record these improvisations I get a strong sense of a "making-ness" as well as the normal "doing-ness" of the musical act. These songs are things that I have made that can be shared and experienced again, and from their making I have derived a deep and lasting satisfaction.
