Solo piano improvisations recorded as a practice in creativity.

The cover features three photos taken from a bus driving from Sydney to Melbourne. After I made this image in the middle of the month, I started re-naming earlier recorded tracks to reflect this aesthetic. As a result this volume has become loosely themed around settings and experiences in rural Victoria and New South Wales.

When I record these improvisations I only occasionally have extramusical content in mind. For the most part I'm trying to play the sounds that arrive naturally in my imagination at that moment. With few exceptions, I name each song after the fact, based on what it sounds like to me. This is the first volume where I've gone back and re-named many of the tracks at the end of the month to tie them together thematically.

I like the way that a name can invite the listener's ears in a particular direction and reframe the music. When I was preparing the first volume for release at the end of 2017 I considered giving them only number/date titles, but found naming them felt too right not to do. For me there is something in a name that gives instrumental music an extra dimension, that situates it on the plane of language where most of our immediate human experiences are comprehended. Music will always access aspects of the human experience beyond language, but by linking it to the language world I feel that it can communicate something to us at multiple levels of understanding.
