about

Improvised pieces made in celebration of the wholeness and beauty found in primary, lived experience.

Recording music that unfolds spontaneously from moment to moment is for me a way of drawing attention to what Terence McKenna calls 'the felt presence of immediate experience'. Drawing us in to the living present to fully experience that which surrounds and becomes us is one of the profoundly important functions that art plays in human life. It also seems to me to be the object of most spiritual, physical, intellectual and social practices.

The last track on this volume takes its name from a line in 'A Song of Zazen' by the poet Hakuin (1686 - 1768). I read in this poem a reminder that true tranquility is this space in which we currently exist, not the better future we hope someday to occupy, nor a higher plain of existence to aspire to. It is 'this very place' we currently find ourselves, with all its hard edges and unpolished surfaces, its awkwardness, its harshness, its total imperfection, that is the 'lotus land' we seek.

An excerpt from this poem is reproduced here:

The Pure Land itself is near.
Those who hear this truth even once
And listen with a grateful heart,
Treasuring it, revering it,
Gain blessings without end.
Much more, those who turn about
And bear witness to self-nature,
Self-nature that is no-nature,
Go far beyond mere doctrine.
Here effect and cause are the same,
The Way is neither two nor three.
With form that is no-form,
Going and coming, we are never astray,
With thought that is no-thought,
Singing and dancing are the voice of the Law.
Boundless and free is the sky of Samádhi!
Bright the full moon of wisdom!
Truly, is anything missing now?
Nirvana is right here, before our eyes,
This very place is the Lotus Land,
This very body, the Buddha.
