about

Another volume of solo piano improvisations--a process-driven work.

I was talking to a videographer, a singer-songwriter and a sound engineer over lunch today about balancing the process and the perception of one's art. While it's healthy to consider, thinking too much about how your work is perceived can become such a source of anxiety and stress that it distracts from the very thing we are trying to do as artists, namely, making art. This is especially true in the world of popular music, where 'popularity' is literally the name of the game.

It was best said by the videographer, who reminded us all that in the very making of things is the soul of what we do. The making itself can be enough, more than enough, in the pursuit of happiness and creative satisfaction. As artists, if we can make our art and love the process and the outcome for their own sake, rather than for how they advance our professional standing, we will be happy people. I believe too that in doing so we are providing a model for others in how to live well. Do your thing, and do it well--challenge yourself and pursue your own ideals--and this is its own extraordinarily powerful source of happiness.

These improvisations are made in that spirit, where the act of making them is the ultimate outcome. I derive enormous satisfaction from this simple ritual, because I know I am creating something that makes me happy. And then to share them with pride--what a joy!
