All prophecies are in a sense self-fulfilling. Stories of fate and destiny throughout history tell us that if the characters take predictions of their "inevitable" triumph or demise seriously, events usually conspire to make it so. Think of Macbeth and Oedipus, to name the most iconic cases. There is something in the structure of existence that responds to our beliefs, for better or worse––if you see nothing but doom in your future, watch as things slide in that direction! To be sure, belief alone is not enough to determine the future. It's the way that our beliefs shapes our actions that counts, as our actions, in however small a way, shape the world around us (while our world in turn may guide our actions).

Keep your eyes open, take the world as it is given to you, acknowledge the reality of danger and deterioration, but don't let your fears rule you! Skiers say that you'll crash right into the trees if you look at them too long. Though you can never avoid all failures (and nor would you really want to), train your eyes on the path between the pitfalls, and give hope the better chance.
